Reuseability in timber construction
SIHGA® contributes to the possibility of reuseability
What does reuseability mean in construction?
Reuseability in construction refers to the ability of a structure or component to be dismantled or removed in a defined process and with minimal effort when it is no longer needed or when it is to be replaced by a new construction project. It also allows the structure to be used for other or further purposes. This property is becoming increasingly important as it promotes the resource-efficient and sustainable use of building materials.
Easily reversible vs. heavily reversible
How easy or difficult it is to dismantle the various components once the building has reached the end of its service life depends, among other things, on the type of installation. In principle, it can be said that mechanical connections (screws, nails, bolts, angle connectors, etc.) are easy to dismantle. Screws or nails, for example, can be easily removed from a wooden beam and the beam itself shows hardly any damage. A great deal of effort is required, for example, when removing well-bonded connections (construction adhesive).
Why is reuseability becoming increasingly important?
Demountability increases the life cycle of various building components. A well-preserved, installed timber wall can be easily removed and incorporated into a new building. This contributes to the circular economy of building materials. Reuseability not only enables relatively pure recycling, it is above all about recycling and reusing as many intact building elements as possible instead of disposing of them.
Resource-conserving construction is an important part of a sustainable future. The dismantling of a building must now be taken into account at the planning stage. This guarantees that it can be returned to the material cycle at the end of its useful life.
SIHGA® connectors contribute to the possibility of reuseability
All SIHGA® mechanical fasteners can contribute to reuseability, as they are relatively easy to dismantle. This includes almost the entire product range, with the exception of our construction adhesive BeziFee®.
Our IdeFix® and HobaFix® product families are particularly worthy of mention here. They have undergone external testing and both have a European Technical Assessment (ETA) certificate.
The intended service life of the construction product was assumed to be 50 years. The two products were subjected to extensive tests and analyses. As a result, they were categorised as easily removable and reusable.
